"A "butterfly test", or "butterfly seek test", is a diagnostic test
performed on disk drives (either hard drives OR floppy drives). It tells
the hardware device to span the read/write heads back and forth across
the drive while it spins the disk, testing the hardware functionality of
the mechanism. This is NOT a volatile test; it will not read or write
data to/from the disk. Those are separate tests. The butterfly seek test
ensures that all of the heads are working, capable of "seeing" all of
the cylinders and sectors on a disk. MicroScope, made by Micro2000, is a
diagnostic product that performs this test (and many others) well. "
