On the heels of John Thompson's visit to the LI User Group last night,
this came across CIS today. Looks like his comments and strategy
regarding connected consumers is on target.

U.S.News: Microsoft vs. the World

Microsoft has declared war! Bill Gates has launched an aggressive plan
to capture the Internet market, and you can read all about it in this
week's edition of U.S.News & World Report in U.S. News Online's
Business & Technology area. Also, you can debate the issue in the U.S.
News Forum's Message Section 6, "Science/Technology." Doubling in size
annually, the Internet already has more than 50 million users worldwide
and more than 20 million in the United States alone. Although Microsoft
caught on later than others, it has finally unveiled an aggressive
strategy that includes offering its Web browser for free, bundling
Internet server software with Windows NT, and adding Web publishing
capabilities to Microsoft's popular word processing and spreadsheet
applications. Microsoft will also license Sun's Java, a programming
language that makes the Internet truly interactive. But the openness
and cross-platform ease that make Java and the Internet explosively
attractive are the very things that threaten Microsoft's dominance. Who
will win? Check out the discussion in the U.S. News Forum and the
article in U.S. News Online. The race has only just begun. To access
the U.S.News Forum, GO USNFOR. To access U.S.News Online, GO USNEWS.
