None of the hard disks tested conformed to the specifications, making it
extremely difficult to

forensically duplicate a hard disk without the hard disk being modified.
Disabling SMART,

unplugging the IDE cable, and powering up a hard disk for several hours
resulted in the

modification of SMART attribute values such as Power_Cycle_Count and/or
Power_On_Hours

for all of the hard disks tested. It was therefore not surprising that a
purpose built hardware

forensic duplicator or purpose built hardware write blocker could not
guarantee to prevent the

modification of these values.
