Absolutnie nie trzeba, wiele dystrybucji udostępnia tzw. "live-cd".
Najbardziej popularny jest knoppix. Bootujesz z płyty zmieniasz hdparam'em

Posiadam syski Maxtora SATA oraz Hitachi SATA, ich parametry zmienialem
programikiem dostarczanym przez producenta (nie było problemów z wykrywaniem
SATA). Nadal twierdze iż otrzymana odpowiedz swiadczy wyłącznie o głupocie
autora...
