Bad news ?

There is bad news and good news.

The bad news is that no work has been done on Win32-OS/2 since A0.04 was
released in September 1998. Also, the individuals leading the development
of Win32-OS/2 have called it quits, mostly because their day jobs have
become too demanding. So A0.04 is the last version of Win32-OS/2.

The good news is much better, though. The OS/2 Netlabs has decided to take
over development of Win32-OS/2, but with a twist. The EverBlue Project is
a group of developers who are porting xlib to OS/2. Xlib is like the
Presentation Manager for the Unix. It is the core library for graphical
applications that run under X Windows on Unix and Unix-like operating
systems. By bringing xlib to OS/2, it will be possible to port easily
almost every Unix application to OS/2. We already have emx for porting
non-GUI applications; xlib takes care of the rest.

What does this have to do with Win32-OS/2? Once xlib is ported to OS/2,
the OS/2 Netlabs will begin porting Wine itself to OS/2. The OS/2 version
of Wine may use some of the code of Win32-OS/2, specifically the code that
converts and loads a Win32 application.

Currently, the OS/2 Netlabs is making preparations for accepting the
source code to Win32-OS/2. The source code to Win32-OS/2 itself will not
be available for some time, if ever. The reason is that a some of the code
is borrowed from other places, and therefore cannot be publicly released
until it is "cleaned up". In the process of merging Win32-OS/2 with Wine,
the OS/2 Netlabs will remove most of the offending code, and the rest will
be made available along with the source code to Wine itself.
