I've always been critical about Matrox' performance, so for a change,
here are some good news after installing the latest driver 2.21.063 (in
combination with the an upgrade to the latest bios version 3.00):

1280x1024x16M on Warp Server SMP (FP36)]
DOS windows (e.g. running dBase) have now fewer redraw problems than
in the past, though some still persist. dBase "Browse" is thus clearly
improved.
You can now switch batch and forth between SVGA full screen sessions
and the desktop without loosing screen sync (and being required to
close the DOS session). Though the DOS screen looks cluttered in most
cases, a redraw fixes that. Some programs like Executor only come back
in 16 colors.
The true color - 8bit conversion *on the card* works now properly
(which you can test e.g. from the previews images in Xact [they were
green-black before]).
That's the good news. The other news is that all of the above bugs
have been fixed on other cards about two years ago [like the color
conversion bug on ATI or ELSA)]; that's when my bug report went to
Matrox.
The bad news is that none of the true color-related bugs on the wps
has been eliminated; not even tackled. The transparent gif problem (of
HPP) and its associated test software will still halt your system in
fractions of a second. Others do the same. OpenGL in 24bit mode (note
that you can select 24Bit drivers by choosing Eizo monitors and 32bit
with Nanao) is black-and-white only and fits the screen window
partially, 32bit is colored, yet useless with the known on screen
displacement for dive.
Hopefully, with another two year backlog we can expect somewhat
improved wps drivers. My only concern is that their developer will
retire before then.
