NTFS file streams

Witam,

W programie Win-RAR, w opcjach dotyczących tworzenia
archiwum jest checkbox opisany jako "Save File Streams".
W helpie do Win-RAR-a piszą o tym tak:

This option has meaning only for NTFS file system under Windows NT/2000 and
allows to save alternative data streams associated with a file. It is
especially important under Windows 2000 and XP, which use streams to keep
some file dependent information such as file descriptions. If you use WinRAR
to backup your NTFS disks, it is recommended to enable this option.

Niby rozumiem, ale nie rozumiem.
Co to są te "file descriptions"? Do czego one są? I po co?
