How public should public information be?
Observers say that's the question underlying the heated reaction to a
plan to sell a CD-ROM version of the Whois Internet domain registry,
which includes telephone numbers and mailing addresses for 2.3 million
domain-name holders.
Hundreds of users complained to Domains on Disc, which planned to sell
the CD-ROM for $250 a pop, that the information would exacerbate the
pestilence of spam, or unsolicited commercial e-mail.
