Agents arrest fugitive computer hacker

Kevin Mitnick, a convicted computer hacker and a federal fugitive wanted
for violating probation, was arrested Wednesday at his apartment in Raleigh,
N.C., the Justice Department said.
It said the arrest occurred shortly after midnight by federal agents and
state and local law enforcement authorities after an intensive two-week
"electronic" manhunt.
Mitnick, 31, was convicted in 1988 in Los Angeles on charges of stealing
computer programs and breaking into corporate computer networks. He received a
one-year prison sentence.
Mitnick vanished from southern California in 1992 and a federal arrest
warrant was issued on charges that he violated the terms of his probation.
While a fugitive, Mitnick allegedly broke into numerous corporate and
communications networks in California, Colorado and North Carolina, causing
damage and stealing secret information, the department said.
It said Mitnick also faces investigation by various state authorities.
