Dfx Announces Voodoo 2

November 4, 1997

To great surprise to no one, 3Dfx has finally
admitted that Voodoo 2 is around the corner.

Like the original Voodoo architecture, the Voodoo 2 chipset
will use an expandable archtecture. The base until will
consist of a 192-bit memory architecture and 2.2 Gigabytes
per second of memory bandwidth, delivering over 50 BOPS
(Billions of Operations per Second). This configuration
delivers 3 million triangles per second and 90 million
 dual-textured, bilinear-filtered, per-pixel MIP-mapped,
alpha-blended, Z-buffered pixels per second, over three
times the performance of the current Voodoo Graphics.

Products using the new chipset (of which one of the first is
expected to be the Diamond Monster 3D 2) are expected to
come in at under $300. Surprisingly 3Dfx has also said that
the Voodoo 2 is an AGP-capable technology that will
eventually support resolutions as high as 1024x768.

``We believe that Voodoo 2 will not only change the way
people play games, but the way that people design games,''
said Greg Ballard, President and CEO, 3Dfx Interactive.
``The original Voodoo Graphics and Voodoo Rush chipsets
opened people's eyes to the possibilities of 3D gaming and
the response has been overwhelming. We have once again set
the standard by which all other 3D accelerators will be
judged.''

Probably the most important part of the new architecture is
the scalable nature of it. With two boards, the chipset will
automatically detect one another and perform scanline
interleaving (much like the way the Obsidian SB100 boards
do). Such a setup yields a 384-bit memory architecture with
4.3 Gigabytes per second memory bandwidth, and an pushing
180 million pixels per second.

Next Generation Online will be in 3Dfx's offices tomorrow
to see Voodoo 2 in action. Expect a full report tomorrow
night at 6pm.
