Following an unusually high failure rate with its 1.6GB 31600 Caviar hard
drives, Western Digital is preparing a software utility that is expected
to detect problems before they occur.

The problem is only with 1.6GB drives that have three platters. WD's newer
line of 1.6GB drives, available today with two platters, are not affected
by the quality problem.

Users with affected drives will receive the newer two-platter version of
the 1.6GB drive as a free replacement.
