Subject: OS2NEWS: NEWS - Navigator for OS/2 (Beta) *Update*

>From PC Week Online for August 29, 1996 by Michael Moeller

Netscape Communications Corp. and IBM today confirmed plans to release
a version of Navigator for OS/2 by the end of next month.

The first version of Navigator for OS/2 is due to enter beta testing
within the next two weeks, with the final version ready for downloading
when IBM ships OS/2 Warp 4.0--code-named Merlin--on Sept. 25.

While not directly integrated into Merlin, the OS/2 version of
Navigator will be free of charge for Merlin users. The browser also

will run on OS/2 Warp Version 3.0 and be free of charge as well.

However, users of Version 3.0 must purchase a Java virtual machine
upgrade from IBM to add Java support to the browser. Pricing for the
virtual machine has not been announced.

The first version of Navigator on OS/2 will not be the recently
introduced Navigator 3.0, but instead Navigator 2.02. While the browser
will initially be a generation old, OS/2 users will be able to use the
speech recognition capabilities integrated into Merlin to surf the
World Wide Web--a feature found on no other platform.

According to officials, the reason for going with the older version of
the browser had to do with timing and porting issues. IBM officials
added that when Netscape's next-generation browser (code-named Galileo)
ships, it will be available immediately for OS/2.

As a result of the deal with Netscape, IBM will no longer develop its
own Web Explorer browser.
