WINDOWS 95 RESELLERS STUCK WITH SURPLUS INVENTORY
The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and other newspapers
report
that retail stores have vast amounts of excess Windows 95 inventory.
It
seems that the channel overestimated the sales of Windows 95.
Resellers
are finding out that they ordered far more than they needed as the
buying trend of Windows 95 has tapered off sharply.
PC Week posted these sales figures for Windows 95 on its Web site:
Week Ended Million of Units
Aug 31 1.2
Sept 6 0.589
Sept 13 0.511
Sept 20 0.367
The trend here is clear. The numbers are well below many pre-launch
projections. The unachieved projections are now being attributed not
to
consumer rejection of the product, but to analysts who were carried
away
by the hype of the launch. "There are a lot of breathless analysts
out
there," said Josh Bernoff, a senior analyst at Forrester Research
Inc.,
of Cambridge, Mass.
