--- There are serious problems with FixPak 6 that have been experienced by more than one user, as documented in usenet postings over the last week. To wit: 1) Problem: The AIC7870.ADD (Adaptec AHA 2940 class SCSI adaptors) that comes with FP6 has the "Translation for drives over 1GB" enabled. This means that if you have partitioned your SCSI drives *without* this feature enabled in the SCSI adapter CMOS options, the partition table appears corrupted to Warp. This can lead to near complete loss of data on these drives if CHKDSK is run with the /f parameter (such as after a power failure). Others report that this also occurs with FP2 - FP5. Fix: Use the AIC7870.ADD driver from an earlier version. This can be done (before applying FP6) by either copying your current driver to a new file name, then deleting the FP6 version and renaming your previous version back to AIC7870.ADD (it can be found in the \os2\boot directory). Another option is to download the latest driver from the Adaptec site and install it before installing FP6. FP6 will recognize this driver as being more recent, and give you the opportunity to keep it by selecting the "Cancel" button in the popup. 2) Problem: With FP6, a file called DSPRES.DLL is copied into \OS2\INSTALL\VGA. There seems to be a good reason for doing this, however, there is a bug in the service program that expects to find this file in the backup directory when you choose to back out of FP6. This leads to a service crash at this point in the restore process, and you have an unstable system due to it being part FP6 and partly at your previous service level. Workaround: If you have a backup and an archive directory for fixpacks, you may find DSPRES.DLL in the archive directory. This can also be found on the original Warp for distribution CD and unpacked from there BEFORE installing FP6. 3) Problem: FP6 breaks Java 1.1.4 performance. Many who have reported trying CaffeineMark 3.0 since installing FP6 have had the performance rating drop from numbers above 2000 to numbers in the 200 - 400 range. There are no reports on how this might affect Java 1.02 installations. Fix: My system now scores normally after having initially had scores in the 200 range after FP6. I have no explanation as to what fixed this problem. 4) IMPORTANT NOTICE: Be sure to follow the instructions for removing the beta DASD drivers for removable drives (Jazz, Zip, Syquest, etc.). Also, if you connect a removable drive, then disconnect it, you may have trouble acessing drives that were lettered higher than the removable drive was (e.g., CDROM drives) Work around: Re-connect the drive. Otherwise, use Unimaint's "Repair" facility (from SoftTouch Systems) to remove references in the ini files to the now missing drive. ONLY EXPERIENCED USERS SHOULD ATTEMPT TO EDIT/REPAIR AN INI FILE. 5) There may be some problems with FP6 and SmartSuite '96. These are still being investigated. Of course, the most important thing to do before applying any fixpack is to back up your system.
