Hi all,

As you will be able to see from the next message, we have finally
decided to go ahead and develop Virtual Pascal v2.0 - primarily thanks
to the efforts of you!

Doing this was not an easy choice. As has been pointed out repeatedly
by myself and others, there almost certainly is not enough of a
commercial basis on which to develop the product - this in spite of all
your applause and the relative technical merits of Virtual Pascal.

Looking at raw figures, VP v2.0 does not have a chance. Compared to the
revenue we are likely to see from sales, it is too expensive to develop.
At the same time, the rest of the fPrint business is booming, leaving
little or no development time for VP.

We nevertheless feel that Virtual Pascal is a great product and do not
want to see it go to waste and have decided to spend our spare time on
developing the new version for which you have been pleading. After some
deliberation, the Managing Director of fPrint has given us permission to
start development of Virtual Pascal v2.0, provided it does not impact on
the rest of the business - I think this is fair enough.

Given the above, I think you will find the feature set announced in the
next message to be impressive. VP v2.0 will support both Win32, OS/2
and some DOS extenders. We include all the source code for the
system-independent RTL, and even for the new Open Debug API. This
means, that you can make VP v2.0 even more cross-platform if you like:
By porting one unit to another platform, you can effectively make VP
support it; by writing a new Debug extension using the ODAPI, the
debugger can be made to work as well.

In spite of all the new and enhanced features, there are things on the
wish lists that are not on the list of planned features. We obviously
want to keep the project at a manageable size, and adding too many
features will push the release date further away - and we want to
release VP v2.0 as soon as possible. If there are enough buyers, we will
just implement some more features in v2.1 :-)

We really do think that the market is very small, but we also know for a
fact that there are enthusiasts and technically minded people who like
the approach that VP offers and are interested in continuing to use it.
To demonstrate that this support is real, *please* sign up for the beta
program as soon as possible. Joining the beta costs the same as an
upgrade from a previous version, and allows you to get the code even
earlier than otherwise!

We hope and think that the VP v2.0 features we have decided upon match
your requirements. If there are serious omissions or you have a really
cool idea, please send us a mail at vpascal_at_ibm.net.

Thank you for all your support!

Allan Mertner, Thomas Mueller and Vitaly Miryanov

  The Virtual Pascal Development team
