                        Abstract

The light microscope has been used to image microsctuctures ever since
Henry Clifton Sorby's first examination in July 1863. Despite the immense
popularity of the scanning electron microscope, the light microscope is
still the preferred first tool to examine microstructure. The limitations
of the SEM are the strengths of the light microscope while the limitations
of the light microscope are the strengths of the SEM..Thus, they are
complementary tools rather than competitive tools. The talk will discuss
the basic components of the light microscope aand some of the important
parameters: magnification, resolution, image contrast and depth of field.
Examples will be presented showing the value of the different image
contrast formation modes - bright field, dark field, polarized light and
differential interference contrast - for viewing microstructures. In a
number of cases, the same field of view will be shown using two, three or
all four of these modes of examination.
